What is Optimal Input?

Optimal Input has the following four characteristics
(Krashen & Mason, 2019):

1. Comprehensible
   Comprehensible does not mean transparent. Input can be comprehensible even if it includes some noise. Noise can include unknown vocabulary or grammar rules that haven't been acquired. Language Acquisition does not require comprehension of every word or every part of every word, but acquirers should understand most of it.
   
2. Interesting/Compelling
   Input is compelling when you are so interested in the content, you temporarily forget it's in another language. Noise will often go unnoticed when content is compelling.
3. Quality
   Optimal Input provides rich language. Rich input contributes to the story and also aids the acquirers' comprehension and by that delivers more language for acquisition. Rich input does not have to controlled for grammar or vocabulary as it automatically includes unacquired language that the acquirer is ready for. (i+1)
   
   
4. Quantity
   Optimal Input is abundant. A large amount of  comprehensible compelling rich input is needed to achieve competence. This will provide more opportunities for acquisition.

Optimaler Input hat die folgenden Eigenschaften
(Krashen & Mason, 2019):

1. Verständlich
   Verständlicher Input muss nicht transparent sein. Input kann auch verständlich sein, wenn es Lärm beinhaltet. Lärm kann aus unbekanntem Vokabular oder grammatikalischen Regeln, die noch nicht erworben wurden, bestehen. Das Verstehen eines jeden Wortes oder jedes Teil eines jedes Wortes ist nicht nötig um Sprache zu erwerben. Jedoch sollten Spracherwerbene das Meiste verstehen.
2. Interessant/Fesselnd
   Input ist fesselnd, wenn man so an dem Inhalt interessiert ist, dass man vorübergehend vergisst, dass er in einer anderen Sprache ist. Wenn der Inhalt fesselnd ist, wird der Lärm oft nicht bemerkt.
3. Qualität
   Optimales Input liefert reichhaltige Sprache. Reichhaltiger Input trägt zur Geschichte bei und hilft dem Erwerber die Sprache zu verstehen und dadurch mehr Sprache für den Spracherwerb zu liefern. Vokabular und Grammatik muss nicht kontrolliert werden, denn reichhaltiger Input enthält automatisch Sprache, für die der Sprachwerwerber bereit ist. (i+1)
4. Quantität
   Optimaler Input muss massenhaft sein. Eine große Menge an verständlichem fesselnden reichem Input ist nötig, um in einer Sprache kompetent zu werden. Dadurch entstehen weitere Möglichkeiten zum Spracherwerb.
